Rainy day bags

It's raining! It never rains here. Last year, Los Angeles got 3.6" of rain. Needless to say, when it rains here the whole city melts into chaos. Streets are flooded, power is out, and I am sitting comfortably at home (with soft jammies and a glass of wine) enjoying the forced calm.

But of course, sometimes you have to get out of the house. So what do you wear in the rain? Although a few water drops probably won't do much, I try not to carry my leather bags in inclement weather. These are my babies after all. When in doubt, I reach for nylon. Here are a few ideas:

I'm not usually a fan of Michael Kors' bags, but I'll make an exception for this. The Kempton is a roomy tote with enough space for your books, wallet, umbrella, water bottle, laptop, and possibly eldest child. Not bad for the price. There's also a small version on sale at Macy's for $72.

This bag is big enough to carry all the extras you need for the rain, but perfectly proportioned so as not to be clunky. Two zip pockets in the front securely organize keys, phones and lipstick, or whatever your small priorities are (hot sauce anyone?). I say go for the leopard, but there's a lovely wine color as well.

You can't talk about nylon bags without mentioning Longchamp. I've never been overly impressed with Longchamp myself, but reviews of their bags are always stellar. I like the Nero for the zip top closure and cute handles. If this bag is for you, Bluefly has it right now for $80

Bonus option: Choose a vegan leather bag. I'm partial to Susan Nichole - see my glowing review of the Blossom. My next purchase may be the Gracie in teal, just right for work with a little pop of color.

What do you carry to weather the storm?
