Extreme Handbags - Vintage Armadillo and Baby Alligator, Oh My!

Apr 29, 2015

A few days ago I introduced you to the Vintage Purse Gallery, where you can see incredible bags from the 1940s to 1960s. But I saved the most extreme bags for this here post.
Friends, that is a real armadillo.
This Real Armadillo Purse is part of the fascinating collection at Vintage Purse Gallery. It's roughly shaped like a football with a flat bottom. Evidently these are still made, which makes me sad. Why someone would want to take a sweet creature and carry it as a bag is beyond me. Personally I'm glad this one belongs to a museum, I find it terrifying and creepy. How about you?

If that wasn't enough, here's another:

According to Wendy Dager, curator of the Vintage Purse Gallery, taxidermy baby alligator bags like this were a popular tourist souvenir from Florida and Cuba from the 1940s and 1950s. I've seen others that include only the head, some that wrap around the bag, and some where the head is the flap of the bag itself. Personally these give me the weebie jeebies!

Both of these bags are heavily damaged and unusable, but still a piece of our history. You can find these and more fascinating bags at VintagePurseGallery.com.

This post is part of the April A to Z Challenge ("extreme" counts as "x," don't you think?). Check out my previous post, Wyatt and Jack, or see all the posts from the Challenge here.

  1. Oh! Poor armadillo. I have blogged about two types of armadillo, the hairy screaming armadillo (of which i have a shell) and the pink fairy armadillo, under the letter X. They are of course on the road to being threatened and extinct, because this is what was done to them... and their loss of habitat. ~Liz http://www.lizbrownleepoet.com (website, Blogger will take you somewhere else!)

  2. So scary once you know that armadillo purse is really! But I also think it would be perfect for a Game of Thrones party!
