On the Inside: Author Chrissy Lessey talks The Coven and Candy Crush

May 14, 2015

Have you ever secretly dreamed of writing a novel? Chrissy Lessey did. Until last year she was a mom, an autism advocate, a summer camp creator and a fan of coffee. Now she can add a new title: Author of The Coven. I'm thrilled to introduce you to her in this episode of On the Inside.

On The Inside is a regular series here at Hello, Handbag featuring exceptional women. We take a look inside their bags to learn what's important to their lifestyle and glean a few tips from the pros.

Let's take a peek in Chrissy's bag and see how she manages life as a novelist.

Chrissy, would you tell us about your bag and what goes in it to make your life as a novelist run smoothly?

My current "go-to" bag is a Dooney & Bourke Hobo in chocolate. It's just the right size for all my essentials.

Some of my must haves include:

1. A notebook. The best plot ideas never strike when I'm sitting in front of my computer. It's great to have a notebook handy to jot down ideas or phrases that come to mind because it's highly unlikely that I'll remember those tidbits when I'm ready to use them.

2. A Uni-Ball Vision Elite Pen. The ink is waterproof and archival quality, so it's perfect for signing books. I am sometimes approached by fans when I'm out and about. If they have their copy of The Coven with them, I'm happy to sign it.

3. A small first aid kit. I have two kids. Need I say more?

4. 3 tubes of Burt's Bees Lip Balm. I don't know why there's three in there. Either I really like this product or I have a pathological fear of chapped lips.

5. Smartphone. There's always work to be done. If I'm waiting in line somewhere, I hate to waste that time. It's the perfect opportunity to catch up on e-mail and texts. I'm all about maximizing productivity.

Just kidding. I use it to play Candy Crush.

Ha! No judgement here.

You can find The Coven on Amazon or at bookstores around the country. The sequel, The Hunted, is due out this fall.

Are you an aspiring novelist? We'd love to hear what you're working on, leave a note below or tag Chrissy (@SpectrumHope) and I (@hello_handbag) in a tweet!

  1. I love the bag! I used to be a Dooney & Bourke girl, then went to Coach, and now I'm sporting a Vera Bradley.
