6 Reasons to Get Excited for Straight/Curve

Jul 5, 2015

Have you heard about Straight/Curve, the new fashion documentary about "plus sized" models? Here are 6 reasons why you should pencil this into your calendar:

1) Non-traditional models are taking the world by storm. Remember Carrie Hammer's Role Models Not Runway Models show? Featuring beautiful women with Down Syndrome, wheelchairs, all-encompassing careers and more, Hammer knocked NY Fashion Week's socks off.

2) Director Jenny McQuaile has the chops to do this right - with documentaries from World Cup soccer for social change to the importance of childhood playtime in war-torn Liberia, McQuaile has the acumen this subject needs.

3) Even models could use body-positive icons. Like Heather Hazzan, a beautiful model who spent eight years in the industry as an unnatural size 0. Hazzan says, "If I was a 13 year old girl and I saw the Jennie Runk ad where she's a size 14... I might think a little bit differently about myself."

4) Because really, maybe we should be rethinking our lexicon for the modeling industry anyway. As model Leah Kelley says, "To show 'the real woman' that means you're going to have to show women. There is no one woman that reflects everyone."

5) Now, friends, it's important to note that this isn't an excuse to be overweight. Here in California more than 1 out of every 5 people is obese. If you're carrying 20 pounds more than you should be, lets talk about getting healthy. I could stand to lose 10 pounds, how about you? Making it happen is tough, but worth it. Just ask Mo'Nique, who has lost (and is keeping off) 80+ lbs:

6) Bottom line - we should be encouraging healthy. I am a size 6-8 and am overall healthy. My sister is a size 0 and healthy. My friend is a size 16 and healthy. We're all different. And I bet you're beautiful just as you are.

Are you excited to see Straight/Curve? I'd love to get a group together in LA, leave a comment below or send me a tweet if you're in!
