Bags that Give Back - Kate Spade On Purpose

Nov 23, 2015

Happy almost Thanksgiving! This week we're taking a look at bags that give back. One of my favorites is the On Purpose line from Kate Spade.

Kate Spade's "On Purpose" is not your typical token charity program. In traditional retail philanthropy, a percentage of each piece you buy might go to the cause. Kate Spade is stepping into a new, more sustainable social enterprise model by sourcing their products and having pieces made by artisans at a facility called ADC in Masoro, Rwanda. More than 150 artisans, mostly women, now make up the work force creating On Purpose products. They receive a salary and benefits. On average each artisan supports 4 people in her family. Each employee is also a part owner of the business, which means she shares in the overall profits. And finally, some of the profits of the company are invested back into the community.
