Balenciaga So White

Mar 15, 2016

Balenciaga's Fall 2016 Ready-To-Wear show rivals the Oscars for the whitest show this year.

The collection, headed by artistic director Demna Gvasalia, features both traditional models hired through an agency and "street models" - people discovered on the street and brought in to walk the runway. It does not include anyone of color.

The Fall 2015 Balenciaga runway show, led by then creative director Alexander Wang, featured 9 models of color.

On the whole, fashion weeks are slowwwwwwwly becoming more diverse. According to The Fashion Spot, New York Fashion Week for Fall 2016 featured nearly 32% non-white models. This was led by designers like Zac Pozen (87% non-white models) and Kanye West for Adidas (100% non-white).

With the focus on street style, Gvasalia has the opportunity to bring in some really beautiful women who better reflect the consumers of his product. Fingers crossed for Balenciaga's Spring 2017 show.
